Do What’s Best for the Team

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

I haven’t posted much, if anything, about Brett Favre since that day in March that he “retired”.  This has been purposeful because I had made peace with the idea of the Packers sans Favre, and, much like the organization’s line right now, felt like I had moved on as a Packers fan.  Still, things change, and now that the Packers (specifically Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy ) are faced with the unenviable task of pissing off no less than one of their QB’s and any number of fans, it’s time to think about what is absolutely the best thing for the team and organization.  My take on this has changed a great deal since the reports started surfacing that number 4 was not ready to hang up the helmet just yet.  Initially I took Favre at his text message…thinking it was all just a non-story that got blown way out of proportion because he mentioned to one guy somewhere that he kinda missed playing.  Seems that it was more than a rumor Brett (so I guess Thompson isn’t the only one saying one thing to the public but another behind closed doors).  My feeling then became that the Packers should just do what they were doing at the time…don’t trade him, don’t cut him, let him either come back and sit, or just retire gracefully.  This would prevent the unthinkable…seeing Brett starting on Monday Night Football on September 8th in a hideous purple uniform (or other similar scenario).  I was more on the “side” of the Packers.  As the situations continued to spiral towards a pit of ugliness not seen in Green Bay since…well…2005 I guess, I felt more and more like Favre was tarnishing both his legacy, and the Packers image by doing what he was doing.

But then, last night, I really had a change of mind.  The thing that keeps going through my head is what Ted Thompson has said repeatedly…that he must do what is in the best interest of the team.  When I really considered this, I came to the conclusion that there is only one choice that is best for the team…

Let Favre Play.  In Green Bay.  As the starting Quarterback.

Now this may sound like it is coming from some crazed Favre fanatic that can’t let go, or some stupid fan that is not considering anything past his own nostalgia for 1996.  While the latter point may be somewhat true (well all but the stupid part), I can honestly say that these are not factors in my opinion.  Let’s take a look at what we are talking about when we say “what is best for the Green Bay Packers”.

There are two points of view from which you must approach this problem.  The first is on the field.  How do you build the best team?  What pieces do you need to reach the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl?  The second is with regards to the integrity and legacy of your franchise, especially in regards to the fan base (which in this case are your shareholders and paying customers rolled into one).  I don’t want to dwell on the latter piece here because I would surmise that anyone reading this blog has a pretty good understanding of this portion.  Favre is a legend.  To see him play for another franchise would be painful, but if it were a division rival, it may even border on intolerable.  The thought that someone as revered as Brett Favre can make the statement that he doesn’t feel wanted by a franchise for which he was the face for the last 16 years is frustrating to say the least.  From the perspective of what I would guess would be a majority of the fans (I am sure there are plenty that would disagree), I would say that this is not true.  There is a difference between not wanting Favre back and having moved on since Favre had stated that his services would no longer be available.  In any case, if you asked any fan what their ideal scenario would be for this whole situation, it would almost certainly end with Favre retiring a Green Bay Packer (whether it be this year, next year, in five years, whenever) never having donned another team’s uniform.

It is the part about assembling the best team possible that really caused me to change my mind about this whole mess.  First of all, just for a moment, forget that this is Brett Favre, and forget all the non-football related stuff that surrounds this circus.  You are the general manager of a football team that was very nearly a Super Bowl participant the preceding season.  Were it not for an other-worldly performance by one other guy in the league, your quarterback would have been the MVP.  You have the guy still under contract, despite the fact that he had already announced his retirement.  On the other hand, you have a possible rising talent who very well could be an all-pro at some point in his career, but is totally unproven over any length of time, and even has shown signs of being injury-prone.  When you look at it from this perspective, I just don’t really see how you can make any other choice than but to go with the perennially proven talent.  MVP or unproven yet promising player?  Ok, now we can bring back into the picture who we are talking about here.  I have heard all the talk about shattering Aaron Rodgers’ confidence if you allow Favre to return as a starter, and frankly, I think that is absurd.  The man is a professional football player.  He should be of the toughest mental mold.  I realize how frustrating this may feel…to have a huge opportunity given to you, and then to have it instantly thrown into jeopardy.  Still, it’s not like he won’t have a chance at some point (if not in 2008, he is a free agent and can sign anywhere he likes).  The Packers have let a good number of better than average quarterbacks leave during Favre’s tenure, and may have some waiting in the wings again.  The point is, when you were a play away from being in the Super Bowl (yes, I know the irony is that it was a Favre play away), you must seize the opportunity that is present, because you are never guaranteed the ability to reach that point again.  You have an MVP caliber quarterback that wants to play.  You have a roster very much unchanged from the 14-4 season of a year ago.  To me, the decision is clear.  You take the proven talent and go for it.  Now.

I am not of the illusion that there are dozens of other arguments and positions to take on this saga.  I also understand that there are several factors at play here that may make some of my points less black and white, and more shades of gray.  Still, my biggest desire as a fan is to see the Green Bay Packers win the Super Bowl, and I feel that Brett Favre gives them the best chance to accomplish that feat in 2008.

Summer Thoughts

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

It’s been a busy spring for the Ranter - his baby boy’s first birthday approaches, his beautiful little girl does something new and hilarious every day, and Skype 4.0 just came out.  So with the actual start of summer right around the corner, I, Mighty Gosling, thought I’d offer a few summer thoughts:

-  Three months into the season and we’ve seen three different Brewer teams - the team that went 0 for Boston including an embarassing appearance on national TV, that team’s mirror opposite by going 8-1 on a recent homestand, and then everything in between.  Never the less, the team is clearly a wild-card contender especially if the line-up stabilizes.  I love Hart up top and who in America isn’t falling in love with Russell Branyan all over again?

- Salomon Torres, or SalTor as i affectionately refer to him, is earning Gagne’s $10 million salary.  I’d propose having them swap contracts but i found out SalTor actually makes $3.3 mil and Gagne doesn’t deserve that.

- As i’m writing this, Russell the Muscle just went yard against the Jays.  He’s probably the greatest Russell ever to play in the majors.

- Sheets and Braun are obvious All-Stars.  But keep your eye on Jason Kendall to wind up in NY.  Why not?

-  I really tried to like Indiana Jones 4 but come on.   The Ark cameo was the best part.

-  The Bucks should go crazy this summer.  Keep Yi, Bogut, and Ramon Sessions.  Everyone else should be on the table.

-  You’re still trying to figure out another major leaguer named Russell, aren’t you?

-  Javon Walker - $100k in ice?  Really?  And I thought I was accessorizing with my recently purchased pocket square.

- Kudos to Lindsay Schwartz, Watertown’s volleyball and track star, who took home the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s area female athlete of the year.  Go Goslings!

- I hate the Cubs.

World Champions

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

Congratulations are in order for a stirring national championship won today by the Warhawks of Whitewater!  Mount Union hadn’t lost in nearly three years.  Here came the team they destroyed the in the previous two Division III championship games, looking like fodder for the third in a row.  Instead, Golliath was defeated by an amazing game turned in by DIII’s player of the year.  Well done Warhawks!

Marquette’s New Look

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Substitute Ranter Mighty Gosling here.  Maybe it’s ’cause i’m not in the midwest but i totally missed the unveiling of Marquette’s new logo and uniforms.  The logo no longer looks like an airline’s.  And the uniforms, the away ones at least, are fantastic.  They have the distinct classic Milwaukee aura with the powder blue.  Makes you want to grow a handlebar mustache and head over to Goolesby’s for a Schlitz.  Just another reason to be expecting a lot from Marquette this year.

Checking In Again

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Sorry for the lack of posting lately. Time has been scarce to work on the blog lately. Still, that doesn’t mean I haven’t been basking in the amazing season Brett Favre and the Packers are having right now. It is very exciting to see the 38 year old Hall of Fame QB perform like an MVP. It will be hard to beat out Tom Brady with the numbers he is putting up, but honestly, is there a player that is more valuable to his team right now? I am not suggesting that Brady is not valuable, or Peyton Manning for that matter. Still, Favre is the reason for all but one of the Packers’ wins this season, and that is the true measure of an MVP. The Pats and Colts very well could have 5 or 6 wins without their star QBs. That being said, I don’t really care to debate the issue anyway. The bottom line is the winning is such a pleasure to watch, that any accolades for the players really don’t matter. The time left in Favre’s career is an unknown, and though he is playing some amazing football right now, it is still unreasonable to expect that he will have that many more chances to win another Super Bowl ring. The last best chance was blown in 2003, but with a weak NFC, and a team that has made major mistakes and still has managed to accumulate 6 wins against 1 loss, this year presents as good an opportunity as any. All you have to do is make it there, and if you are peaking at the right time…who knows how far they can go. I just love that the Packers are relevant again!

Moving on to quick topics:

  • The Badger football team really proved they were terribly overrated earlier this year. They can really get back to a respectable team by knocking off the Buckeyes this weekend, but if I were a betting man I would wager heavily against that possibility.
  • The Bucks opened the season tonight in Orlando. Does anyone really care? I have been such a huge Bucks fan in the past, but I just have a very hard time getting excited about this team, Yi or otherwise. Besides, tonight, it was a tie game in the third quarter when I stepped away to take care of a few things. When I returned just before the end of the period, the Bucks deficit had ballooned to 23 points. Nice.
  • I wanted to post this when the regular season ended, but does anyone else find it interesting that of the 4 expansion teams to enter the league since the Brewers last winning season, 3 of them have reached the World Series, and 2 of them have actually won the whole thing (the Marlins even did it twice). Also, most teams wore pullovers and elastic-waist pants the last time the Brewers played in the post season. Ouch.

Hopefully I will be able to return to a regular posting schedule shortly. With NCAA basketball right around the corner, I will have to anyway.

Miller Brewing = Judas?

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

So i had the joy of witnessing what the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel labeled as the 2nd best Brewer game of the season’s first half.  But as sweet as that 13-4 drubbing of the Cubs was , I was soured by the betrayal I witnessed across the street, behind the right field bleachers.  There, in the former spot of the Torco sign, stood a billboard sponsored by Miller Brewing which read, “We Prefer Pennant Chases to Sausage Races.”  I couldn’t belive it.  Before my very eyes, Miller Brewing, which has called Milwaukee home for over 150 years, had a paid advertisement demeaning the team whose house bears its name.  I was enraged.  So enraged that I fired off this email to Miller Brewing.

I’m concerned over the choice in advertising Miller chose to make recently in Chicago, IL.  During a game at Wrigley Field in Chicago between the Chicago Cubs and the Milwaukee Brewers, whose home field is named for Miller beer, Miller ran an advertisement on a billboard that the whole stadium could see which read, “We prefer penant chases to sausage races.”  This was obviously a shot at the tradition at Miller Park where life-sized sausages race around the track in between innings. I could not understand why Miller would take a shot at the team from its hometown and the team whose home is named after Miller, especially at a game at which many Milwaukee Brewers fans were in attendance.  I found this to be terrible marketing and i’m very disappointed in Miller for its poor advertising choice.

The game was on Saturday, June 30th.  Today, July 11th, I received this response:

Thank you for your recent email to Miller Brewing Company.Miller Brewing Company fully supports the Milwaukee Brewers. The sign that was posted at Wrigley Field for the Cubs Brewers series was not meant to offend the Milwaukee Brewers or the sausage races at Miller Park.  The intent of the sign was just to create friendly debate among Brewers and Cubs fans about two teams who are both at the top of their division for the first time in many years.  Miller Brewing Company agrees with all Brewers supporters that we would like to see our home team - not the Cubs — in the pennant race. Thanks again for contacting the Miller Brewing Company. Sincerely,Miller Brewing Company Consumer Affairs Department

I’m sorry Miller, but anything short of a full apology and promise to refrain from such blasphemy in the future is unacceptable.  Your words are but an empty can of Sharps to me.

If I Lived in Milwaukee Right Now…

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

Major League PosterIf I were still in the Cream City last night, I would totally have gone to Miller Park (to where Major League Baseball relocated the Indians vs Angels game) dressed in full Indian (er…Native American) garb, complete with tee pee and drum, and done my best Randy Quaid:

“Wild Thing, I think I LOATHE you!”

They should have had Uecker stay back to call the game over the PA. I bet they would have sold the place out then…even his namesake seats!

The Rant Returns

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Ok, the hiatus is coming to an end. I have reread my last post several times, just to see if I still agree with it. It was written pretty soon after the loss, so I was a bit worried that I would regret some of what I said. Well, I don’t at all. Perhaps some of my language was a bit harsh, but everything I wrote I still stand by. That said, my bitterness received a shot in the arm tonight. By winning the NCAA tourney, Florida has now won more championships in the last two years, in just one sport - football not included!, than I have seen all the teams covered in this blog win in my entire life! Not only are sports a continual disappointment, they are not close to fair either. But whoever said they should be, right? So, with that, the Rant can get back to business.

Brewers LogoNice start to the year, for both Sheets and the Brewers. Not to sound pessimistic (ah bull$+@*, this is totally glass half empty), but the Bucks started off this season with a solid win in Detroit, and we all know what direction their season took from there. Let’s just hope the Brewers don’t follow the same path. Tim Kurkjian of ESPN did bring up one fascinating point tonight. Ben Sheets has the lowest walk percentage of any pitcher in history who averages a strikeout per inning. He went on to say that if he stays healthy the Brewers have a chance, otherwise they don’t. Well…like the historical evidence has made me a pessismist when it comes to the Brewers’ chances of making the playoffs, said evidence makes me equally skeptical they can keep Sheets off the DL. Please Brewers, prove me wrong.

Marquette Bounces Back

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

Marquette LogoMarquette had to have this game, and they did. Lazar Haywood came alive, and Dominic James finally contributed as he had been when they were winning. The result was a solid double-digit victory at home against a middle-of-the-pack Villanova team. This time, Marquette didn’t give the opposition a chance to pull out a late game victory, instead pulling away 3/4ths of the way through the game. At 9-5 in conference, and 22-7 overall, Marquette could still use a couple more wins to get to a decent seed. It will not be easy, as they have games remaining against Notre Dame and Pittsburgh. However, achieving at least a split could get them that first round bye in the Big East tournament, which would be hugely beneficial towards that NCAA tourney seeding. Hopefully this is Marquette getting permanently back on track at the right time.  They need to play these last two games with fire and intensity, as well as to understand that in order to make it anywhere in the post season, they need to bring their ‘A’ game for 40 minutes at a time.

Sorry for the Delay…

Monday, January 15th, 2007

Just a quick update:  I have been out of town for the last couple of weeks, and simply have NOT had time to update the blog.  I know, I know…pretty bad time to take a leave of absence seeing as how many events have taken place during that time.  The good news is I will begin posting again this week, beginning with a Badger Football Wrap Up in the next day or two.  Thanks for you patience!
